BIO
I was born in rural Colorado into a family of schoolteachers, ranchers and hard rock miners. I have spent my life in small towns that often serve as the basis for my fiction.
We moved all the time as I grew up, and I saw a lot of the country from the window of a car. I still enjoy driving around.
I studied film, anthropology and creative writing at the University of Iowa, then published my first short stories while traveling and working in Europe and Ireland.
I lived in rural Japan for a number of years, returned to the United States for graduate study, then taught at universities in Florida, Japan and Australia.
I now teach interactive narrative design and direct the Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies program at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California.
